    President's Report

    Greetings fellow NARI members,

I hope you are all adapting well to our new COVID normal. In talking with many of our members, I know the impact of the pandemic varies widely with our businesses. Some of our members have seen a significant drop in their business, others are having banner years, and many are down slightly but concerned about their backlogs over the next 6 to 9 months. I have participated on several national calls recently and I’m hearing the same conditions nationally as we have regionally. Those companies that seem to be faring the best are those that are being creative in how they approach the market to find new customers and offer solutions that are more appealing to the new work from home environment. The National website has some great resources on marketing or give us a call and we can direct you to some resources or schedule a virtual meeting for our membership on this topic.

I think it is important for you all to know how our local chapter is faring in these difficult times as well. Our member companies continue to renew their memberships and our recent golf outing was a great success. Maintaining membership levels and successful revenue generators like the golf tournament are important to our survival. So from that perspective we are doing well and I thank you for your continued support. Our board has taken some actions recently to reduce expenses in areas we feel have the lowest impact to the members to ensure we keep on budget for the remainder of 2020. We want to continue to be a resource for our members through training classes, Peer to Peer groups, and personal outreach. We will continue to look for ways to add value to your membership on a Regional as well as a National level. I am always open for a discussion as well if you have ideas about what our local chapter can do better to add value to your membership.

Until next time, I wish you well and hang in there.

    NARI PNW Chapter News

    Update from Codes Committee

Here are some reminders and updates from our Codes Committee pertaining to codes and building departments in the City of Portland:

    • Portland FIR program is continuing to operate smoothly. Keep in mind FIR inspectors are not allowed to enter the living space in an occupied home, they must be able to directly enter the jobsite area without passing through the owners living area due to COVID concerns.
    • Portland BDS has 80% of its workforce currently working from home.  This has extended the time for plan review and permit issuance by several weeks in many cases.
    • Due to COVID Portland has suspended the exploration of ADU projects under the FIR program.  Detached ADU’s are still not allowed under a FIR permit.
    • Portland BDS is beginning to adopt the use of Facetime and Zoom for smaller scope inspections and re-inspections for corrections.
    • Most other building departments/municipalities around the area (Tigard, Lake Oswego) are seeing longer turnaround times due to reduced workforces and furloughs.

    ReFIT Project Spotlight

Thank you to Bill Myles and the crew from Craftsman Design & Renovation, a long time NARI Pacific NW member, for the beautiful ramp they built. Our client, Lorenzo, who recently had to have his leg amputated and who is now using a wheelchair said "I was allowed to go home from the hospital once I had a ramp put in and Craftsman Design & Renovation rose to the challenge!" Thank you again crew, you changed a life! Here is a before and after picture showcasing their hardwork:
