    President's Report

To my fellow NARI PNW Chapter members,

I hope you are all doing well and adjusting to our new normal. It seems like life is pulling me in a lot of different directions and I long for a return to a pre-Covid life. I feel “zoomed out”, disconnected from my virtual friends, and constantly preaching to my employees that they need to try to block out all the personal and political issues and focus on their tasks for the day. I hope you are feeling different, but I’m sure many of you can relate. As we enter the last quarter of 2020, I am asking for your assistance and focus with our chapter. We still have some great things planned between now and the end of the year and we would love your participation.

    • On October 14th 5:30 – 7:30 we have a panel discussion group from Garrison Hullinger Interior Design that will be sharing their design process. This will be a great opportunity to incorporate a proven process into your own design process.
    • October also brings our chapter COTY awards. I would encourage you to submit a project for review. The process is not as burdensome as it may appear and it provides a great opportunity to not only showcase your work to fellow NARI members, but to validate your skills with prospective clients. It’s one thing to claim you do great work, but having that review by your peers and an award to go with it provides great validation.

November: Your NARI board will start the Strategic planning process for 2021. We will be putting together a plan to add value to our members and provide some great opportunities for sponsorship promotion for our members.

December: We will be working on a year end meeting to welcome in 2021 and kick 2020 to the curb. Stay tuned for that.

I hope you can find it in your schedule to give the chapter a little love between now and the end of the year. I hope you see you soon at our next event and I look forward to your COTY submissions. Thanks.

    Update from Codes Committee

Here are some reminders and updates from our Codes Committee pertaining to codes and building departments in the City of Portland:

    • On August 12th, City Council voted to adopt the Residential Infill Project (RIP). The changes proposed by this project would allow more housing units to be built in residential neighborhoods, but only if they follow new limits on size and scale.
    • Portland has amended the Building Demolition Code for clarity and eliminated redundant provisions and language. You can find a summary of the changes here:
    • Portland BDS is revising the Code Guide for Habitable Space Standard for Existing Elements to clarify ceiling height calculations.
    • BES is conducting an update of the Stormwater Management Manual. The update will have little impact on small projects or single family homes and mostly involves the design and engineering of stormwater management systems.

    ReFIT Project Spotlight

Thank you to Summit Reconstruction & Restoration for spending a weekend helping Michelle get a ramp. Michelle recently became paralyzed and must be in a wheelchair making it impossible for her to get in and out of her mobile home. Unfortunately, she could not leave the facility she was in until the ramp was completed. Thanks to Summit’s fast response Michelle was able to move back home and avoid paying thousands in rent at the facility she was staying. Thank you Summit for your hardwork and generosity!
